BOOK 6

Of all the things in the Universe - it is supposed that humankind knows the workings of its own mind best. It has intellect — which it believes to be unique and singular in the Universe. To demonstrate that intellect — humanity has compiled a modest lexicon. The modesty of the lexicon reveals the modesty of its intellect.

CONCEPTION OF MIND
i
There is intellect, sense and psyche,
Sconce, reason, vernunft and wits.
Faculty of mind, gifts, talents ...
Pate, noddle, noggin, nouse.

There is intelligence and savvy,
Verstand, comprehension, reach ...
Astuteness, acumen and foresight,
Canny cunning, geist, ésprit.

Thus are sages ... Plato, Nestor,
Solomon, Manu, Buddha, Christ!
Sensible, prudent, knowing, wise,
Oraclers, luminaries, shafts of light!

They were sober, sound and sane,
Right in mind, compos mentis.
They got things in proportion,
Brought to reason all that's bonkers.

In the know — with ken and savvy,
They acquainted, mastered, grasped,
Gripped it pat, dead to rights ....
They had it at their finger tips.

Brainwork, headwork, mental labour,
Workings of the mind ... ideas.
They weighed, mused, pondered all,
Profoundly thought ... deliberated.
